１９８９年１２月、単身でフィリピンに会議のために出張していた時、クーデ
ター未遂事件に巻き込まれ、５日間戦場で命を脅かされる体験をしました。反乱
軍の包囲網の中、集団暴行を受けた末に射殺される事態を覚悟しながら、恐怖の
中で過ごした１週間は、私の世界観や、戦争・平和への見方を一変する貴重な体
験となりました。その後３年間は、事件を思い出すだけで恐怖がよみがえり、体
験を文にすることが出来ませんでしたが、三年経って、この教訓を忘れることが
ないように記録に残すことにしました。随分昔の事件について、自分だけの防備
録として書いたものですが、よろしければお読みください。

In December, 1989, when I was visiting the Philippines for a conference,
I was stuck in Manila by one of the biggest coup d'etat attempts during
the Aquino administration. I spent 5 days in terror, in the midst of the
battle field, completely surrounded by the rebel soldiers. I had to
prepare myself to get mass raped and then shot. This one week in Manila
changed my life, my view of the world and my perception of war and
peace. I was so traumatized with this experience that I could not even
think about it for three years. But as time passed, something propelled
me to write about it so that I would not forget this precious life
lesson. This story about an old, forgotten incident was written only for
